Navigating the process can be challenging, especially when there are a lot of loose ends. Selecting a Professional Builder/ General Contractor becomes essential to ensure the project is carefully planned, remains on schedule and you, the homeowner, moves in on the agreed-upon date. 

To ensure everything goes smoothly, your General Contractor must know how to properly manage the project and create a plan that everyone can follow. 

Creating an effective schedule means considering the many variables of working with designers, city inspectors, subcontractors and suppliers, accounting for weather delays, managing missing or delayed materials, etc. No construction project goes perfectly according to plan, but a solid, well-communicated plan will help you meet your schedule and get the job done on time. 

Here are 5 ways to ensure that you stick to your project schedule:

1. Review all Plans, Scope and Project Details with your General Contractor 

Make sure you have a full understanding of the project scope and are on the same page as your general contractor. Carefully review all construction drawings, design specifications, scope and construction agreement. Depending on the season and time of the project, many of the best trades are booked months in advance (e.g. concrete, underpinning and framers to name a few). Engaging a General Contractor early on ensures the best trades are available when needed, and that any interruptions between subcontractors are limited. 

2. Create a Detailed Project Schedule with Milestones 

A professional general contractor has the experience necessary to quantify the time it takes to complete various project activities. The activities need to follow a particular sequence. In some cases several activities can be completed in parallel (at the same time), while in other cases only one activity can be performed at a time.
